Livestreaming

Where it is: Side menu → LivestreamingIncluded in every account

Livestreaming is where you say where you stream to and with which keys. There's one tab per network; on each you see its metrics, and with its ⚙ gear you connect the account (for chat and events) and set up its RTMP destination (server + key) to stream.

How does each network tab work? What's behind the ⚙ gear?

Each network has a thin bar at the top with its status and a ⚙ gear. The gear opens a dialog with two sections:

  • Account: connect your account to get chat and events (gifts, follows, subs…). It's what the multichat, voice chat, Live Actions and widgets use.
  • Emission (RTMP destination): the server and stream key to send the video. Press Save and turn the destination on with its switch: only destinations that are on go out when streaming.

Below the bar are that network's stream metrics.

Tip: Connecting the account and setting up the stream are different things: you can stream without connecting the account (but with no chat or events), and connect it without streaming from Studio.

TikTok: how do I stream if I don't have a key?

TikTok only gives a stream key to accounts that meet its LIVE requirements (about 1,000 followers, quite a few more if you don't do gaming). That's why Studio's default route is Restream:

  1. 1Create a free Restream account and connect your TikTok there.
  2. 2In Studio, on the TikTok tab, open the ⚙ gear and leave the route on Restream.
  3. 3Copy the server and key Restream gives you (not TikTok's), paste them and press Save.
  4. 4Turn on the RTMP destination.
  5. 5For chat and events, enter your TikTok username (without @). When you press Stream with the destination on, it connects by itself.

Tip: If you have your own TikTok key (TikTok LIVE Studio), choose the other route and paste the server and key TikTok gives you.

TikTok: are the title and category sent?

The title is, if you link your Restream account with Connect with Restream and pick which of your channels it is. It's optional: without linking you still stream, with the title Restream has set.

The category isn't: Restream's API only accepts title and description. Set it once on Restream and it stays saved on the channel.

TikTok: it doesn't connect or events don't arrive. What do I do?

  • Make sure you're live on TikTok: it can only connect while the stream is open.
  • Check that the username is spelled right, without @, exactly as it shows on your profile.
  • Even if it says “connected”, the events connection can take a few seconds or a couple of minutes to set up; after that they arrive in real time.

Twitch: how do I connect it?

On the Twitch tab, open the ⚙ gear and press Connect with Twitch: the browser opens, you authorize it and your stream key arrives by itself. If it doesn't, paste it yourself (Creator Dashboard → Settings → Stream). Press Save and turn on the RTMP destination.

Title and category are sent automatically when you go live. If Studio asks you to reconnect your Twitch account, it's because a new permission was added (for example, to send the title).

Kick: how do I connect it?

Connect your Kick account in the ⚙ gear to get chat and events. You copy the stream key from Kick (Creator Dashboard → Settings → Stream → Stream Key), paste it, press Save and turn on the RTMP destination.

YouTube: how do I enter my stream key?

On the YouTube tab, open the ⚙ gear:

  • Copy the key from YouTube Studio → Go live and paste it in the RTMP destination; press Save and turn it on.
  • Once your account can be connected, Connect with YouTube will give you chat and metrics, and Get key from YouTube will fill the key in for you (if you have several, it asks which one belongs to each stream).

Important: Connecting the YouTube account is opening up gradually. Meanwhile you can still stream by pasting the key from YouTube Studio.

YouTube: what is the dual stream and why does the vertical have to be set to “Encoder”?

The Dual stream (16:9 + 9:16) sends a horizontal stream and a vertical one for Shorts at the same time. Each needs its own key from YouTube Studio.

In YouTube Studio → Go live, set the vertical panel to “Encoder” and copy its “Key: Vertical” into Studio's vertical destination. Until both keys are right and both destinations are on, YouTube won't start the stream.

If you don't want to send the vertical, leave it on “Auto crop” on YouTube and turn the dual stream off in Studio.

Important: Sometimes YouTube switches the vertical back to “Auto crop” on its own: check it and change it before you go live. If you turn on the dual stream without the vertical destination, Studio warns you with a Windows alert.

YouTube: why does the stream take a while to go live?

YouTube takes a while to go from “Preparing stream” to “Live”, especially with the dual stream. Studio waits while you keep streaming and applies the title and settings as soon as YouTube allows it.

If you switch the vertical from “Auto crop” to “Encoder” with the stream already running, YouTube can get stuck on “Preparing stream”: cut the vertical destination with ■ and resume it with ▶.

YouTube: what can I set from Studio when going live?

In the Stream dialog, YouTube's ⚙ gear opens YouTube settings. They're applied to your stream every time you go live; anything left on “Don't change” stays as it is on YouTube:

  • Description: saved on your computer and added to every stream.
  • Thumbnail: JPG or PNG up to 2 MB, ideally 1280×720 (YouTube only allows it if your channel is verified).
  • Privacy: public, unlisted (link only) or private.
  • Language and tags (comma separated).
  • Latency: normal (best quality), low or ultra low (chat almost instant).
  • Rewind (DVR): allow rewinding or not.
  • Add the stream to a playlist.
  • End the YouTube stream when pressing “Stop”: otherwise YouTube waits a while without signal before ending it.

The title and category are set in the Stream dialog itself.

Tip: Latency and rewind are set when the stream starts: if YouTube had already started it, they may only change on the next one.

YouTube: how do I schedule a stream? And how do I cancel it?

In YouTube settings → Schedule a stream:

  1. 1Write the scheduled stream title and, if you like, its own description.
  2. 2Pick the date and time and press Schedule. It shows on your channel as “Upcoming” and notifies your subscribers.
  3. 3When the time comes and you go live, Studio sets that scheduled stream's description by itself.
  4. 4To cancel it, find it in Your scheduled streams and press Cancel. It's deleted from your channel and can't be undone.

Which stream quality should I choose?

In Livestreaming → Emission you choose the resolution, fps and bitrate of what you send to the platforms. There's no setting that's good for everyone: it depends on your upload speed, your computer and the game.

As a guide: 1080p at 60 fps needs about 6 Mbps of upload per network; 720p at 30 fps, about 3. With multistream, add up each network and leave some margin.

Tip: If the stream drops or stutters, lower the bitrate first.

What is “Reporting”?

The metrics of your saved streams. Pick a date range and, on each network tab, you'll see the metrics and donors of the streams in that period instead of the live data. Back to live returns to the current data.

Multichat: how do I reply and moderate every network from one place?

The multichat puts together the chat from TikTok, Twitch, Kick and YouTube. You open it in its own window with Studio's Multichat switch, or with the Multichat button in Livestreaming.

  • Write in the chat: use the box at the bottom; it tells you which networks it'll be sent to. Those networks' accounts need to be connected.
  • Highlight in scene: shows a comment big in your scene's Highlight box. If you highlight several, they wait in a queue.
  • Save comment: puts it aside in the Saved tab to read later.
  • Moderate (shield): delete the message, time out for 5 minutes, ban from chat or make moderator, depending on what each network allows.
  • Overlay style: transparent, to put on top of a game. You can hide the header and change the font size.

Tip: A keyboard shortcut locks and unlocks the window's clicks: locked, clicks go through to what's underneath. You change it with the Multichat button in Livestreaming.
